The Realistic Joneses
Two sets of suburban neighbors navigate marriage, mortality, and midlife melancholy in Will Eno's delicately dark comedy. An offbeat meditation on common names and uncommon connections.

The Realistic Joneses
Harbor Stage Company
Despite how consistently laugh-out-loud this play is for its two-hour duration, it’s intensively introspective, existential, and heavy at the same time. Like yin and yang, they balance each other out, never letting one facet become too overbearing as to make the play’s subject matter indigestible. The foundational differences among these four characters make for hilarious exchanges excellently written by Eno and expertly delivered by the cast, under the direction of Alison Greene.

And this new production at the Harbor Stage is nothing short of stunning. Directed with precision by Alison Greene, who did a bang-up job with the company’s last show, The Mousetrap, it stars three of its founding members — Brenda Withers, Jonathan Fielding, and Robert Kropf — and Samantha Steinmetz, who was a marvelous guest earlier this season in Withers’s Prize Fight. They make a melodious quartet.
The Realistic Joneses
Harbor Stage Company
This is a play that could be a dismal failure if not handled deftly, but Alison Greene directs it to perfection, drawing out the best from an absolutely stellar cast, delivering perfect timing and perfect technique. The Realistic Joneses is a brilliant choice: it’s exactly the small, intimate, cerebral play at which the company excels, and this production is close to perfection.
