Harbor Stage is up to its usual stratospheric standards: the timing is sharp, the humor wonderful, and everyone is completely inhabiting their characters with gusto—Kropf and Lambert are particularly sensational in their flamboyant roles. Does that detract from enjoyment of the play? I don’t think so; Harbor Stage cannot set a foot wrong and there are absolutely delightful moments in this production. Kropf’s direction is—as always—deft and inspired, and all the actors give their characters everything they’ve got.

I can see why this ensemble might have been a delicious temptation for the actor-run Harbor Stage Company, which has put together an impressive and charismatic production of Dame Agatha’s iconic play in its intimate theater, running through Aug. 8. The stunning set by Justin Lahue creates an eerie mood of introspection. It’s a dignified wood-paneled and wallpapered space with sconces and curtains, antique furniture, and a hearth, all of it beautifully lit by John R. Malinowski.

Oh my, what fun, just what the doctor ordered for a wonderfully entertaining escape from current events. The Mousetrap at the Harbor Stage is an opportunity for the company to show off their chops individually and in ensemble. No wonder Agatha Christie’s clever murder mystery is the longest running play in history. Rhythmically and expertly directed by Robert Kropf, the action takes place on a wood-paneled, Victorian set which acts as its own character—with scenes in the parlor, and behind doors, through doors, and up and down stairs, beautifully designed by Justin Lahue and lit with indelible atmosphere by John R. Malinowski.
