The Sorcerer 2026

At College Light Opera Company
—

The Sorcerer (1877), the second collaboration between librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan and the first of their renowned "Savoy Operas," satirizes class distinctions and the institution of marriage through a whimsical magical mishap. The aristocratic Lady Sangazure commissions the sorcerer Alexis Keen to brew a love potion intended to unite the villagers of Burgtown with their ideal partners; however, Alexis accidentally mixes the elixir so that it instead causes people to fall in love with those they are least suited for. This results in chaotic and socially disastrous pairings that threaten to ruin the villagers' lives, including Alexis's own romance with Madeline. The conflict is resolved when Alexis, heartbroken by Madeline's rejection, drinks the potion himself to win her affection, proving that true compatibility can be found where one least expects it; once the enchantment fades, the villagers discover they are now perfectly matched to their new partners, and everyone lives happily ever after.
