The Secret Garden 2026

At College Light Opera Company

The Secret Garden is a musical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel, centering on the transformative power of nature, friendship, and healing. The story follows Mary Lennox, a sullen and neglected young girl sent to live with her reclusive uncle, Archibald Craven, at Misselthwaite Manor in the English countryside after her parents die in an cholera outbreak. There, Mary befriends Martha, the housemaid, and Colin, her invalid cousin who is convinced he is dying and confined to a wheelchair. Guided by a mysterious robin, Mary discovers a locked garden that belonged to her aunt, and with the help of Dickon, a local boy who has a gift for communicating with animals, she begins to restore the garden to life. As the garden blooms, so do Mary and Colin; their physical and emotional health improves dramatically, leading them to confront the grief and repression that have haunted the household. The musical culminates in Colin’s miraculous recovery and his public appearance, which finally moves Uncle Craven to return home and embrace the healing warmth of love and sunlight, symbolizing the restoration of hope and vitality to the entire manor.
