Pippin is a rock musical that follows the journey of Pippin, the young, aimless son of Charlemagne, King of the Franks, who is desperate to find meaning and purpose in his life. Guided by a charismatic stage manager known as the Leading Player, who presents various mentors and experiences, Pippin seeks "the perfect moment" of personal fulfillment. He first pursues glory in war under the mentorship of his father’s general, Bertrand, only to witness the horrifying reality of violence and death. Next, he seeks sensual pleasure and artistic inspiration with the enchanting witch Fastrada, who ultimately reveals herself as a manipulator seeking power. Finally, Pippin joins a group of hippies in the countryside, where he finds community and peace, only to realize that this too is a temporary escape. In the end, Pippin rejects all conventional paths to happiness—war, sex, drugs, or simplicity—and instead chooses to accept the inherent imperfections and uncertainties of everyday life, finding true fulfillment not in a grand achievement, but in the simple, imperfect reality of being alive with those he loves.
