The Fall Of The House Of Usher
Over the top drama, exaggerated emotions, high stakes, sensational situations… It’s a melodrama! Gip’s wildly popular adaptation of this Edgar Allan Poe short story was a huge hit in 1990. Gip passed away recently and his creative influence extended to many, many artists in Lower Cape theater. We have chosen to mount this production to honor Gip’s early work, and incredibly fertile creative energy.

The cast is superb. Mike Steers’ Roderick is creepy, pushing the envelope on an over-the-top performance on the edge of madness in a splendid portrayal. By contrast, Jade Schulyer’s Madeline is crazy in full bloom. Schulyer perfectly captures the manic sibling. Nathaniel Hall Taylor’s Ed Allen is fascinating in the way he reacts to the two — first stymied, then enthralled.

Steers is completely mesmerizing in his portrayal of Roderick—he captures the longing, the loneliness, the fragile mental health, and the soul-agony of one of Poe’s most memorable characters. The apparitions themselves are absolutely fabulous. They live mostly as ancestral portraits, but when they come out to play they add a full measure of agony to Roderick’s world.

The set is masterful. A dilapidated living room where stairs, floors and banisters are all at weird and dizzyingly off-kilter angles. Imagine one of MC Escher’s “impossible staircases” come to life. Through one of the askew windows, an enormous full moon looms. Gothic music adds to the horror-movie-like atmosphere. All the performers are outstanding in this over-the-top production.
